So today was the big day...the 2-month check up! Here are the vital statistics: Sean is 9 lbs, 5 oz, Luke is 9 lbs even, and Charlotte is 8 lbs, 12 oz. Charlotte has been gaining on the boys, mostly because a few weeks ago I switched the boys to soy formula to see if we could improve their gassy/fussy situation. It hasn't made a bit of difference, and the doctor really prefers the "high calorie" formula that Charlotte's on because it provides some extra nutrients that they missed out on that last month they weren't in the womb. So, back to the "high cal" stuff we go for all of them! What's funny is the high calorie formula is 22 calories per ounce versus 20 calories an ounce for the regular stuff. Their bottles are about 4 ounces, so they will get an extra 8 calories per feeding...that's it! Must make a difference. Their weights put them all at about the 5th percentile for their age. Pretty good for preemies!
All in all they checked out well. Only one tiny concern was that Charlotte's head circumference has grown at a rapid rate, and is at the 75th percentile while her weight is at just the 5th percentile. The doctor wants to check her again in a month, as an enlarged head can be a sign of hydrocephalus, an abnormal accumulation of fluid on the brain. Because she's doing so well otherwise, and is the most active and alert of the three, the doctor isn't overly concerned, but wants to keep an eye on it anyway. Please keep Charlotte in your prayers!
This week we also had the babies evaluated by Early Intervention, a state-run program that evaluates children at risk for or displaying developmental delays. Because of their premature birth and multiples status, we thought it best to get them evaluated, as it's free and our tax dollars are paying for it anyway. The great news is that they all passed with flying colors, landed at or above their adjusted age in all areas, and the therapists didn't feel there was any need for treatments or therapies at this time. I guess this is pretty unusual, so we were thrilled. If we ever feel they are displaying any delays, we can always have them re-evaluated.
Other fun things going on are that we're going to have the babies' first portraits taken next week. A photographer will come here to the house which will make it SO much easier to ensure they're well rested and fed. Be on the lookout for that photo in the Christmas cards! Also coming up is the baptism for the babies on November 11th, a visit from Grandma Burke, and Thanksgiving with Aunt Suzan, Uncle Steve and Brad. A big month for some little 2 month old babies, but we'll manage.
